Many remote villages in Nepal can be only reached on foot which results that transporting most things has to be done by man-power. Loads are generally transported in ‘doko’, traditional nepalese basket made from dry bamboo strips. Many families use one ‘doko’ for many years by the time is started to falling apart and new one is needed. ‘Doko’ is deeply rooted in nepalese tradition, besides carrying goods, vegetables or water pots, is used also to carrying kids or small animals.

Outstanding, traditional, handmade basket was an inspiration for the project. Woven bamboo structure was used as a roof construction, which provide functional solution and an exceptional form in the same time.

All functions are located on the U-shaped plan with inner atrium which provide additional common space. Community farm around the building was proposed as a part of development plan for the site, where local people can grow bamboo which might be use for some construction repairs or fruits and vegetables to supply food for the village.

In relations to risk of earthquakes, the building is divided into three parts with independent supporting structure and foundations. Walls are made from local rocks using traditional building methods. Roofs, inspired by traditional nepalese basket, take the form of truncated pyramid. Bamboo supporting structure is covered in order by layer of woven net, interlocking shingles, thick sheets of linen soaked in tar and outer layer of woven bamboo net. All bamboo elements are coated with 3 layers of rubber tree oil to protect material from moisture.
